The first Spacelab module was launched November 28, 1983 on Space Shuttle Columbia's STS-9 mission. Dr. Ulf Merbold served as the European Space Agency's Payload Specialist on the ten-day mission, marking the first time a non-astronaut and non-American was launched in a U.S. spacecraft. The Marshall Space Flight Center had management responsibility for Spacelab. Approx 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.
